🇸🇬 NEW: Chinatown Heritage Centre - Time Travel to the 1940s

Yesterday, I visited the newly opened Chinatown Heritage Centre. It is located on Pagoda Street, right a few steps from the main exit of Chinatown MRT Station. The Chinatown Heritage Centre is a small museum but with a rich collection of timepieces, and each object tells a story. The rooms of the tailor, the physician, the hawker, the carpenter, the samsui woman and majie all tell their own stories. Visiting this museum is like stepping back in time, back to the days of early 20th century Singapore. Chinatown then was the heart of the British colony’s Chinese immigrant community, that most Singaporeans today including myself descend from. But Chinatown then like Singapore today is also multiethnic, it wasn’t just Chinese. The Chulias were the first Indians to settle the area, hence the name “Chulia Street” in our CBD. Absolutely recommend visiting with an open and curious mind. Many of the exhibits do not have direct explanations at the museum so it is up to you to craft your own ideas on what story each object tells! Admission is free for Singaporeans, and half-price for foreign visitors, till 16 Feb!
