Bai Chuan Village

#japantrip Shirakawa-go is a historic village located in the mountainous region of Gifu Prefecture, Japan. It is renowned for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are over 250 years old. The name "gassho-zukuri" translates to "constructed like hands in prayer," reflecting the steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall and to provide space for silkworm cultivation. Shirakawa-go, along with Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The village is particularly picturesque in winter, when the snow-covered roofs create a fairy-tale-like scene. It is also a popular destination in other seasons for its beautiful landscapes and well-preserved cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the traditional houses, some of which are open as museums, stay in ryokan (traditional inns), and experience the serene rural lifestyle.
