Shirakawago, located in Japan's Gifu Prefecture, is renowned for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are over 250 years old. The village, along with Gokayama in neighboring Toyama Prefecture, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. Gassho-zukuri, meaning "constructed like hands in prayer," refers to the steeply thatched roofs of the houses, designed to withstand heavy snowfall. The village's remote location in the Shogawa River Valley contributed to its unique architectural style and preserved cultural heritage. The houses' roofs are constructed without nails and are instead supported by an intricate wooden framework, enabling them to endure the harsh winters. These roofs are also designed to provide space for silkworm cultivation, which was a primary source of income for villagers. Tourism plays a significant role in Shirakawago's economy today, attracting visitors year-round.
