[Shimoda Perry Road] A place where history intersects with the opening of Japan

In 1854, the Treaty of Peace and Amity between the United States and Japan opened the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate! In fact, Shimoda is also connected to Sakamoto Ryoma and Yoshida Shoin. It is said that Katsu Kaishu and Yamauchi Toyoshige met in Shimoda and allowed Ryoma to escape from his domain. It is said that Shoin was captured by the shogunate when he tried to board the Black Ships in a small boat (to study). Perry is said to have walked Perry Road many times during and after the treaty was signed. Due to the warm climate of Izu, the buildings from that time have been left as they were.
