Nagasaki Shimabara Clock Tower, a historic city landmark

Shimabara City, Nagasaki Prefecture is a city in the northwest of Kyushu Island, Japan, located in the center of the Shimabara Peninsula. Shimabara City has many historical attractions, the most famous of which is the clock tower. The Clock Tower (Japanese: 時計台) is a clock tower located in the center of Shimabara City. It was built in 1675 by the Shimabara Domain Lord Matsudaira Tadafusa to inform citizens of the time. The clock tower is 13.2 meters high and 69 centimeters in diameter, and the diameter of the bell is 1.3 meters. The clock tower rings once every hour and is a historic city landmark in Shimabara City. The clock tower was destroyed during World War II but was rebuilt in 1955. The rebuilt bell tower still retains its original style and is an important historical site of Shimabara City. In addition to viewing the clock tower itself, visitors can also visit the bell tower next to the clock tower (Japanese:钟撞堂).
