The center was jointly developed by China Merchants Shekou and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in the United Kingdom and officially opened on December 2, 2017. The Sea World Culture and Arts Center was designed by the famous architect Fumihiko Maki and is his first architectural project in mainland China4. The building is divided into two parts: a sculptural podium and three cantilevered boxes. The sculptural podium contains exhibition pavilions and retail areas, while the cantilevered box houses a cinema, restaurant and multi-purpose space. The building's exterior is covered in white and green granite, with a simple and modern design that blends harmoniously with the surrounding natural landscape. There are four main exhibition spaces in the Sea World Culture and Art Center: the Main Exhibition Hall, the V&A Hall, the Landscape Exhibition Hall and the Shenzhen UNESCO Hall. Among them, the V&A Museum showcases the changes and developments in the fields of Eastern and Western design, and is the first branch of V&A opened overseas.
