Originating from Cave 102 of the Maijishan Grottoes, this disciple statue features a handsome face, long neck, rounded shoulders, a symmetrical round face, slightly squinting eyes, long and clear eyebrows, a smiling mouth corner, gentle and reserved expression, embodying the Western Wei Buddhist sculpture’s artistic pursuit of secularization and humanization. The texture of the clothing is shown through layered lines. The statue wears a kasaya draped over the right shoulder, crossing naturally over the chest and hanging from both arms. The carving of the garment folds is simple and smooth, portraying the image of a young disciple. Cave 102, as a masterpiece cave of Western Wei sculptures, reflects the Buddhist beliefs, artistic aesthetics, and the craftsmen’s delicate depiction of the spiritual world of figures at that time.
