A Glimpse into Shanghai Museum East Wing (Part 2): Painting Gallery

Shanghai Museum East Wing, located on Century Avenue in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, officially opened to the public in December last year. The museum has a total of 20 exhibition halls, including 8 permanent exhibition halls, such as the Bronze Gallery, Calligraphy Gallery, Painting Gallery, Seal and Engraving Gallery, Ceramics Gallery, Currency Gallery, Sculpture Gallery, and Jade Gallery. All of them are introduced in the order of ancient Chinese history, and the exhibits cover a wide range of periods and categories. Each permanent exhibition hall is a "museum hall" for the corresponding category. Due to the large number of precious cultural relics in the Shanghai Museum East Wing, the 8 permanent exhibition halls will be introduced in multiple posts. This post introduces the important exhibits in the "Chinese Paintings" exhibition hall on the 2nd floor of the Shanghai Museum East Wing: 1️⃣ Prohibited from leaving the country (Figure 2, 3) ⭐⭐Tang Sun Wei, "Lofty Spirits" scroll (on display until Feb 19) According to research, this painting is a fragment of "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Forest," and the four figures are Shan Tao, Wang Rong, Liu Ling, and Ruan Ji. The figures are accurately depicted, the brushwork is meticulous and vigorous, and the colors are rich and elegant. The painting is simple and solemn, vividly depicting the unrestrained and uninhibited demeanor of the Wei and Jin literati. It is a rare and authentic masterpiece of Tang paintings. 2️⃣ Limited-time exhibition of "Museum Treasures" (Figure 4-7) ⭐⭐Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, Xu Xi, "Snow Bamboo" hanging scroll (on display until Feb 19) The painting is uncolored and only uses ink to outline the structure. The white space is used to represent snow, depicting the scene of a bamboo forest in the depths of winter. The painting depicts the vigorous spirit of the bamboo and trees in the cold and harsh environment. On the left side of the stone, there are eight characters in reverse seal script, "This bamboo is worth a hundred taels of gold." ⭐⭐Southern Song Dynasty, anonymous, "Welcoming the Emperor at Wangxian Palace" hanging scroll (on display until Feb 19) This is a rare and large-scale figure painting. The last time it was exhibited was 60 years ago. The painting vividly depicts the historical scene of Emperor Suzong of Tang welcoming Emperor Shangzong of Tang at Wangxian Palace in Shaanxi in the second year of Zhisheng (757). It is a rare work of art that presents a dramatic scene in ancient Chinese paintings. 3️⃣ Three of the "Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty" (Figure 8-10) ⭐Yuan Wang Meng, "Dwelling in the Qingbian Mountains" scroll ⭐Yuan Ni Zan, "Six Gentlemen" scroll ⭐Yuan Wu Zhen, "Fisherman" scroll (detail) 4️⃣ Other important exhibits (Figure 11-18) ⭐⭐Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, Dong Yuan, "Summer Mountains" scroll ⭐⭐Northern Song Dynasty, Zhao Ji, "Willow and Magpie" scroll ⭐Yuan Qian Xuan, "Floating Jade Mountain" scroll ⭐Yuan Zhao Mengfu, "Orchid and Stone" hanging scroll ⭐Ming Dong Qichang, "Smoke and Mountains" scroll (detail) ⭐Ming Wen Zhengming, "True Appreciation Studio" scroll ⭐Qing Zhu Da, "Fish and Duck" hanging scroll (detail) ⭐⭐Qing Wang Hui, "Chongjiang Diezhang" scroll (detail) The "Special Exhibition Hall of Calligraphy and Painting" is located next to the exit of the Painting Gallery.
