Jade Buddha Temple: An Ancient Temple in Shanghai, a Spiritual Place for New Year Wishes

Jade Buddha Temple is a Chan Buddhist temple located at No. 170 Anyuan Road, Putuo District, Shanghai. It is named after the jade Buddha enshrined in the temple. In the eighth year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing dynasty, Master Huigen brought a jade Buddha back from Myanmar, which was first enshrined in Zhanghuabang and later in a temple built in Jiangwan. In 1918, a new temple was built on Anyuan Road and completed in 1928. The temple has a rich collection of cultural relics, and the jade Buddha statue is the largest in China. As a famous temple in Shanghai, Jade Buddha Temple is not only a religious sanctuary but also a tourist attraction, attracting many believers and tourists to pray and visit. ✅Main Buildings: - Hall of Heavenly Kings: The first hall of Jade Buddha Temple, facing south and opening three doors, is integrated with the mountain gate. The Maitreya Bodhisattva is enshrined in the south, the Weituo Bodhisattva in the north, and the Four Heavenly Kings on both sides.  - Guanyin Hall: Located on the north side of the Hall of Heavenly Kings, it enshrines a bronze Guanyin statue from the Ming dynasty, with a smooth robe, full of patterns, and a necklace that shines.  - Mahavira Hall: The main building of Jade Buddha Temple, located on the central axis behind Guanyin Hall. The hall is seven rooms wide and five rooms deep, with a two-story structure in the style of a Song dynasty palace. Three golden Buddha statues are enshrined in the center, with 20 heavenly statues on both sides, and a large sea island Guanyin wall sculpture on the back of the Buddha.  - Ksitigarbha Hall: Located on the east side of Guanyin Hall, opposite the Three Saints Hall, the hall is a brown wooden structure in the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, enshrining the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Guan Gong. - Manjusri Hall: Located on the east side of Mahavira Hall, opposite the Samantabhadra Hall, the hall is a brown wooden structure in the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, enshrining a bronze Manjusri Bodhisattva statue with gold leaf. - Reclining Buddha Hall: Enshrines two reclining Buddhas, a small one brought back by Huigen from Myanmar and a large one brought back by Zhenchan from Singapore. 🕙Opening Hours: New Year's Eve 20:30 - 24:00; New Year's Day 00:30 - 17:00; January 25 21:30 - January 26 00:30. No reservation or incense ticket is required on other dates except for the special periods mentioned above.
