He Dong Mansion

457 North Shaanxi Road, built in 1928, was originally the private residence of Hong Kong businessman Ho Tung, known as "He Dong Mansion." In 1958, it became the editorial office of the Zhonghua Book Company, and later served as the office of the Shanghai Lexicographical Publishing House. It is now an art and cultural industry park, and was declared an outstanding historical building in Shanghai in 2005. This is a Renaissance-style garden residence, one of many classical-style mansions designed by the famous Hungarian architect Hudec for foreign businessmen in the French Concession when he first arrived at the Klee & Co. According to Hudec's letters, he was responsible for the design of the interior furnishings and supervised the construction of the residence on site. According to records, the building originally occupied a large area, with a huge garden, and the main building covered an area of nearly 1,000 square meters, located in the center of the garden, facing south. It is a two-story mixed structure, combining French Renaissance and Baroque styles, with some decorative details reflecting the Art Nouveau style. Outside the building, there is a garden of about 3,000 square meters, with winding paths and rocks, small bridges and flowing water, a nearly century-old ancient vine, and two sturdy and towering century-old camphor trees, providing shade and making this residence in the bustling city exceptionally tranquil.
