Huaihai Park: A park transformed from a foreigner's cemetery

Huaihai Park, located at No. 177 Huaihai Middle Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, is bordered by Pu'an Road to the east and Taicang Road to the south, adjacent to Huaihai Middle Road. The site of Huaihai Park was originally the Baxianqiao Cemetery. During the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, the Bureau of Public Works of the British and American Concessions established a new cemetery for the British and American Concessions here, and the French Concession Public Director also established a new cemetery for the French Concession nearby. These two cemeteries were collectively referred to as the Baxianqiao Cemetery, where foreigners were basically buried. In 1956, the Shanghai Municipal Government decided to transform the Baxianqiao Cemetery into a park, and all the graves were moved to Ji'an Cemetery in Qingpu. On July 1, 1958, Huaihai Park was completed and opened to the public. Today, Huaihai Park is lush with green grass and blooming flowers, and the trees are lush. There are more than 120 kinds of ornamental plants in the park, with a total of more than 40,000 woody plants and a green space rate of nearly 70%. The park is mainly for tourists to entertain and rest, and often holds various exhibitions, performances and other small activities.
