Hu Wen Sui Art Museum

Hu Wen Sui (July 24, 1918 - February 19, 1999), a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang, was a disciple of the famous calligrapher Mr. Shen Yinmo, a master of contemporary Chinese calligraphy, and one of the representatives of the Shanghai School of calligraphy in the history of contemporary Chinese calligraphy. He is also a significant calligraphy theorist and early organizer of calligraphy activities. He assisted Mr. Shen Yinmo in establishing the first national calligrapher organization in Shanghai - the Shanghai Chinese Calligraphy and Seal Carving Research Association (the predecessor of the Shanghai Calligraphy Association). At the same time, he was appointed to prepare a large-scale calligraphy class held at the Youth Palace, which trained a large number of calligraphy artists and made outstanding contributions to the glory of Shanghai's Shanghai School of calligraphy. From the 'Washing the Old and Coming the New - Hu Wen Sui Calligraphy Exhibition' at the Hu Wen Sui Art Museum, it can be seen that Hu Wen Sui is good at regular, running, and cursive scripts. His works are thick and heavy, strong and fast, especially the regular script, which is a 'great atmosphere'. The biggest feature of Mr. Hu Wen Sui's calligraphy is his profound skills. In 2019, the family of Hu Wen Sui donated nearly a thousand classic works of Hu Wen Sui to the Huangpu District People's Government, hoping to further promote the Shanghai School of calligraphy and inherit Chinese calligraphy art.
