Permanently Now: Stephen Shore Retrospective

🌟When everyone can pick up a mobile phone and record the scenery/people/events they see, and when the action of photography itself no longer has a threshold, what do we want to see when appreciating photographic works? This is a question that often comes to mind when visiting a photography exhibition. 🔎During this visit to the retrospective exhibition of the photography works of the internationally renowned photography master Stephen Shore, you can learn about two genres in advance, namely: New Color Photography and New Topographic Photography. 💡To put it simply, the background of the emergence of new color photography is an era in which black and white photos are considered art, color photos are tacky and cheap, and photographing daily life is not considered a work of art. In 1972, Shore took a series of 5-inch snapshots entitled "American Representations", recording the social landscape and daily details of life at the time. These snapshots were coldly received at the first exhibition, but only attracted attention more than 20 years later and were considered a model of "new color photography". 🔎Another famous series, “Unusual Places”, was shot by Shore with a large-format camera, recording the social outlook of the United States at the time. The casual feeling at first glance actually comes from the carefully designed structure. 🎥New terrain photography is a way of objectively recording man-made landscapes (such as houses and factories). Shore began creating the series "Terrain" in 2020, using DJI drones and Hasselblad cameras to show American daily life from a new perspective.
