Yu Yuan — a Garden Oasis in the Center of Shanghai's Old City Yu Garden is thought to have been constructed during the Ming Dynasty, about 400 years ago. Yu Garden, also known as Yuyuan Garden or Yu Yuan in Chinese, is a classical garden in Shanghai's Huangpu District that is a must-see destination. It was owned by a government officer named Pan Yunduan during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Yu means pleasing and fulfilling in Chinese, and this garden was created especially for Pan's parents to have a peaceful and happy retirement time. Classic Chinese architecture, magnificent sculptures and carvings, and the bustling Yuyuan bazaar are among the garden's features. The garden has a one-of-a-kind design.
