The Sapporo Clock Tower, which has been around for 130 years, is officially called the "Former Sapporo Agricultural College Drill Hall." Sapporo Agricultural College is the predecessor of Hokkaido University and opened in 1876 with the aim of training leaders for the development of Hokkaido. The drill hall was built in 1878 as a central auditorium for military training, entrance ceremonies, graduation ceremonies, and other events for agricultural school students, based on the opinion of Dr. Clark. I was surprised to learn that there was no clock tower when the school opened, and that it was added later at the instruction of the governor who attended the completion ceremony.
