Santo wines - the best in Santorini

#100waysoftravel To say that our experience with the Santorni-based winery, Santo Wines, was wonderful, would be the understatement of the year! First things first, if you are a lover of high-quality wine, unique terroir, and a first-class tasting room experience, you MUST make a reservation at Santo Wines. The tasting room sits atop a high point on the caldrea, overlooking not only the sea, but also Santorini’s sister-islands. We visited in the evening and were initially blown away by the view and the elegant ambience of the tasting room, and that was before we were given an extraordinary tour of the Santo Wines winery itself. Santo’s winery was constructed to mirror the terraces layering the island itself and takes advantage of gravity to make the harvest season run all the more smoothly. I grew up and have worked in a few wineries myself over the years, and I’m not easily impressed by the facilities anymore. I tell you this so that you’ll understand how spectacular this winery actually was! I was completely enraptured. It was like entering a holy place for wine, and emulated the ingenuity of Santorini’s finest winemakers. My sister and I were hosted by Santo Wines’ passionate marketing manager, Katerina. She was the best hostess we could have asked for, and by the end of our tour and tasting we felt like old friends! We had a once-in-a-life-time experience sipping on the best Assyrtiko the caldera had to offer as the sun set. The wine was superb, and by far the best balanced and aromatic bottles we had while drinking on Santorini. Santo Wines was the only winery we bought wine from on our trip to the island because not only was it the best wine we’d had, but it was also fairly priced (compared to the bottles we’re used to buying from Oregon and California). We were also treated to a charcuterie board which boasted absolutely delicious local cheeses, so if you happen to go, don’t miss out on the food! This is all to say, that if you’re a wine lover, you absolutely can’t miss out on the tasting experience at Santo Wines. It is well worth the trip
