Stonehenge

#uktrip Stonehenge is justifiably an iconic historical site. Maybe it's the picturesque location and placement of these rocks. Or maybe knowing that this monument dates so long ago and that (maybe) the stones were transported long distances from their source. Anyway, Stonehenge is well worth visiting, particularly as you get close to it. But I gave this rating 4 stars (rather than 5) due to English Heritage's unfortunate visitor system. Stonehenge is now a long distance from the visitor centre, requiring a boring long walk or a continuous bus service. Opening hours in mid-October were ridiculously short (must enter by 3:30pm, and even then the ticket offices were closed). Last bus was approx. 4:30pm. At one time, visitors parked a few minutes walk from Stonehenge, no busses were necessary, and I recall last visits were later. Who thought of putting the visitor centre so far away? Surely that long distance wasn't necessary for security reasons. And land closer to the site could have been acquired. Visited 3rd week in October 2024
