Have you ever heard of the term "mini-shinkansen"? This 400 series shinkansen is the original mini-shinkansen! The first mini-shinkansen in Japan was the 400 series that runs on the Yamagata Shinkansen. Shinkansen trains are designed with a wider body than regular conventional trains, but the Yamagata Shinkansen runs on conventional train sections in addition to the shinkansen section, so the width of the body is adjusted to match that of conventional trains!
