The Smolny Cathedral

The Smolny Cathedral is part of the architectural ensemble of the Smolny Convent, located in Saint Petersburg on the left bank of the Neva River. The Smolny Cathedral and the Smolny Convent were built in the Baroque style under the decree of Empress Elizabeth, who intended to retire to the convent in her old age. The Smolny Cathedral was established as the cathedral of the first educational institution for noble girls or girls of noble descent in Russia. Over time, the Smolny Institute became the most prestigious institution for women.
