Castel Sant'Angelo (Italian: Castel Sant'Angelo) is a castle in Rome, Italy, located on the banks of the Tiber River near the Vatican. Initially serving as a fortress, it was then used as a prison, and eventually transformed into a lavish papal palace. Now, Castel Sant'Angelo has become a museum and one of the local tourist attractions. In the 6th century, Pope Gregory I passed by this place and saw the Archangel Michael appearing, hence the castle was named.
