Ravenna, the city of mosaics

Ravenna in northern Italy was the capital of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD and the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire in the 6th century, leaving behind a series of early Christian churches and mausoleums. People at that time did not know how to build huge domes. The church looks simple on the outside, but the mosaics inside are exquisite. The eye-catching blue and yellow colors make up for the shortcomings of the characters' dull expressions. Basilica di San Vitale is the main church with an octagonal dome and a double-layer structure. The mosaics on both sides of the altar include portraits of the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I and his queen. The Queen came from a humble background and had dedicated herself to fighting for gender equality. The mosaics in Basilica di S.Apollinare Nuovo are arguably the most beautiful in the city.
