The ancient academy hidden in the mountain village of Quanzhou

Houlong Academy is located at the foot of Shuangbinlou Mountain in Houlong Village, Wufeng Town, Yongchun County, Quanzhou, with a gold-letter-shaped facade, facing south with its back to the north. It is the only ancient academy in Yongchun County that is still well-preserved. Houlong Academy consists of two study halls: Zhuyuanzhai and Guixuan. According to the 'Yingchuan Houlong Chen Family Genealogy', as early as the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, the thirteenth ancestor of the Houlong Chen family, Su Hou (a tribute student), built 'Zhuyuanzhai' at about the age of twenty, which is the predecessor of Houlong Academy, with a history of 300 years to date. Later, during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty (1796—1820), the sixteenth ancestor of the Houlong Chen family, Chen Xiaowu, continued to build Guixuan study hall and planted osmanthus and jade pen flower trees. The two study halls thus formed a garden-style academy.
