Meizhou Island Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Laid- back Holiday on Meizhou Island
Meizhou Island is a small fishing town off the coast of Putian, Fujian province in China. To get there, you can take a bus or taxi from Putian city to the coast (shipping wharf), where you will need to board a ferry to get to the island.
The town is very laid back, and the hotels are mostly family owned hostels. There are great Chinese restaurants, and you can also find some Western take out restaurants.
The beaches are really beautiful, specifically the sunsets. Meizhou island is said to be the birthplace of the goddess Mazu, and her statue can be seen at the main temple on the island. There are plenty of beautiful temples to visit, and the architecture is also quite unique.
Meizhou island is a perfect place to find some peace and quiet, outside of the city. I went during Chinese Spring Festival, and there were hardly any people. It was lovely.

Staying on Meizhou Island is too comfortable!
OMG! I suspect I've found the cheapest treasure hotel on Meizhou Island
The average cost is less than a hundred, with a huge screen projection near the Goose Tail Divine Rock Geological Park (a popular tourist spot)
On Meizhou Island, ordering takeout is delivered directly to the room, also averaging less than a hundred! Clear pricing! Students, go for it!! They even provide free transportation
Location
Goose Tail Divine Rock Geological Park, Golden Beach, Dream Forest, Sunset Time, Mazu Peace Town (Film and TV City), Mangrove Forest, Feiji Cave (popular tourist spot)
Convenient transportation, close to the bus station, and it's very convenient to take a taxi anywhere
The hotel is cheap but the environment is great, paying just over a hundred to enjoy the treatment of a five-star hotel is amazing! Large windows, high-definition projection, modern decoration style, and the service is also very enthusiastic and patient in solving various problems. This hotel is too good to stay in, I will stay here again next time I come to Meizhou Island!

Mazu Temple Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Mazu Temple
Mazu Temple, also known as "Meizhou Mazu Ancestral Temple", is located on Meizhou Island in Putian City, Fujian Province. It was founded in the fourth year of Yongxi during the Northern Song Dynasty (987 AD) and is the birthplace of Mazu culture.
The Meizhou Mazu Ancestral Temple is the first Mazu temple in the world. The existing buildings are mostly of Qing Dynasty structure. The temple complex is arranged along the central axis of the front hall, built according to the mountain terrain, forming a main temple path with a depth of 300 meters and a height difference of more than 40 meters, connected by 323 steps from the mountain gate, the ceremonial gate to the main hall, linking various buildings on both sides. At the top of the ancestral temple mountain, there is also a 14-meter-tall giant Mazu stone statue. The Meizhou Mazu Ancestral Temple complex mainly consists of the main hall, the sleeping hall, and the Holy Parents' Shrine, which have undergone several renovations and expansions to achieve the current layout.
Mazu's original name was Lin Mo, born on March 23, 960 AD, in Putian, Fujian. Mazu is also known as Silent Lady and Mother, who was intelligent and perceptive from a young age. As an adult, she understood astronomy, knew medical theories, was eager to do good and help others, and did many good deeds, earning the love and reverence of the people.
Itinerary:
The Mazu Temple is not large, and it is recommended that visitors enter from the large archway at the intersection of Meizhou Avenue and Pilgrimage Road. Proceed upwards, passing through the mountain gate, the Imperial Edict Gate, the main hall, the Heavenly Queen Hall, the Ascension Tower, and reaching the Mazu stone statue. Along this route, most of the buildings seen are small and ancient. Afterwards, head towards the Heavenly Queen Hall, Mazu Culture Exhibition Hall, Shunji Hall, and the gates of the Heavenly Consort Palace, where the buildings are newly built large palaces. Then return along the same path, passing by the Guanyin Hall and the Wudi Temple.

Travel Guide | Meizhou Island
🚗 Driving to Meizhou Island's Wenjia Wharf is a challenging experience. If you choose to drive, you might see congested traffic conditions on the map, and it's best to immediately find roadside parking. Sometimes local villagers will wave at you to help find a parking spot, although they may charge a fee of 20 yuan. This can avoid the trouble of entering Wenjia Wharf's parking lot, where it's often hard to find a spot. 😅
Make sure to verify your ID on the Meizhou Island ferry's public account the night before, to avoid delays in the queue the next day. Although the staff may not be very enthusiastic, it's only because they receive too many phone calls. The policy in February 2023 is half-price tickets plus a 45 yuan ferry fee, totaling 77 yuan. It's rare to enjoy such a discount at a 5A-level scenic spot. 📅
After disembarking, there are several modes of transportation to choose from. You can take a bus, with prices detailed in the picture below; or you can rent an electric sightseeing car for about 260 to 360 yuan, which is cost-effective for larger groups. Alternatively, you can rent an electric scooter to freely navigate the island's ring road, with prices ranging from 80 to 100 yuan, or even rent an electric mini-car similar to a Wuling Hongguang mini to fully enjoy the freedom. 🛵
Here's a suggested itinerary (for reference only): Start from Mazu Temple, pass through Rainbow Road, Meiyu Tidal Sound, Tianfei's Hometown, Lianchi Ao Beach (coastal cycling), Reclining Buddha Garden, Ping'an Li Flower Sea, Goose Tail Marine Erosion Geopark (watch the sunset), Golden Beach, and finally return to the starting point. 🗺
The climate on Meizhou Island is quite variable, so be sure to dress warmly. It's recommended to wear double layers, with a down jacket as the outer layer, especially at the end of February when the wind is particularly strong. 🧥
As for dining, there are many restaurants near Wenjia Wharf, and Putian braised noodles are only 15 yuan per serving, making it a cost-effective choice. 🍜 I hope this copywriting modification meets your needs! If there's anything else that needs to be adjusted, please let me know. 😊

Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Quanzhou is too crowded, so I went to the less popular and off-the-beaten-path Putian
✨Compared to Quanzhou, which is described as 'half the city is bustling with fireworks, the other half is like a fairyland,' Putian is much more niche
It has various temples, Taoist temples, churches, and ancient buildings and houses that can be seen everywhere
National treasures are everywhere, the cost of living is cheap, the snacks are the best in southern Fujian, and the attractions do not require admission fees
🚘I took my parents on a trip to Putian, and we really loved it!
❗I've coded a super practical travel guide for you, remember to save it!
.
🚆【About Transportation】
Since the attractions in Putian worth visiting are quite scattered, I took my parents from Hangzhou on a high-speed train to Putian Station, which took about 3 and a half hours~
After arriving in Putian, we rented a car for self-driving, which is more convenient for getting around! The car rental cost is 280 yuan/day~
Worried that they would get hungry on the way, I also specifically put some hunger-resistant and nutritious snacks in the car and in the bags we carried, like instant eggs, chicken legs, etc., ready to eat whenever we wanted~
.
💃【Tour Itinerary】
D1 :
Nanshan Guanghua Temple + Shakyamuni Buddha Pagoda👉🏻Dongshan Bao'en Temple + Dongshan Meizhou Mazu Palace👉🏻Eastern Twenty-Five Slopes + Hanjiang Old Street District
D2:
Xinghua Mansion Historical and Cultural Street District👉🏻Yuanmiao Temple Sanqing Hall👉🏻Xinghua Mansion City God Temple
.
✅Nanshan Guanghua Temple + Shakyamuni Buddha Pagoda
Once you enter Guanghua Temple, you'll see towering ancient trees and numerous monks, with magnificent Buddhist palaces, which is extremely impressive
The Shakyamuni Buddha Pagoda is on the left side of the entrance of Guanghua Temple, a national key cultural relic, a stone pagoda in the style of a wooden pavilion, simple and quiet.
.
✅Dongshan Bao'en Temple + Dongshan Meizhou Mazu Palace
Bao'en Temple is a temple that amazed me, a national protected cultural relic, with a high dome design and a strong sense of space.
The Mazu Palace is next to Bao'en Temple, built during the Song Dynasty, with a very characteristic entrance, a very typical Minnan style, great for taking photos.
.
✅Eastern Twenty-Five Slopes + Hanjiang Old Street District
Buildings from the 1930s, known as the 'Venice of the East,' the red brick structure looks great in photos with a sense of depth, recommended to go in the afternoon for better lighting.
Hanjiang Old Street was a real surprise! It hides many local specialty snacks and workshops, giving a sense of time travel.
.
✅Xinghua Mansion Historical and Cultural Street District
This is the most bustling area in Putian, in addition to the traditional Minnan-style residences, there are various intangible cultural heritage exhibitions, local food, and cultural and creative shops.
.
✅Yuanmiao Temple Sanqing Hall
One of the most worth-seeing Song Dynasty wooden structures in southern China, known as a wonder of ancient architecture in the south of the Yangtze River, architecture enthusiasts will be thrilled! I stayed there for at least 2 hours!
.
🥢【What to Eat】
✔Tianjiu Wang Qiang Meat: Intangible cultural heritage snack, rich soup, chewy, fragrant!
✔Chen Ji Chunfeng Flat Food: Located in Xitianwei, popular among locals.
✔Braised Noodle Uncle: Signature lychee meat and Putian braised noodles are a must-order.
.
🏨【Where to Stay】
When traveling, I'm used to staying at Atour Hotels, booked Yuhu Atour in Putian,
The location is in the city center, 348 yuan/night, convenient to go anywhere.
.
💁I took my parents on this self-driving route that encapsulates the essence of Putian's old city!
The whole journey does not require admission fees! Eating and staying are very cheap! If you also want to find a quiet and less popular city to travel to, I sincerely recommend Putian to you!

Must-visit attractions
Meizhou Island Wharf - Rainbow Road cycling - Meiyu Tidal Sound - Mazu Ancestral Temple - Tianfei Homeland - Lianchi Ao Beach - Mazu Film and Television Park - Goose Tail Divine Rock Park - Golden Beach
Scenic spot tour
First stop: Rainbow Road.
🌈 To the right of the ferry exit 🫱 is the island's ring road, which is very picturesque when the weather is good, perfect for a leisurely bike ride, feeling the sea breeze on your face. 💕
Second stop: Meiyu Tidal Sound.
Can be visited together with Rainbow Road, arrived around noon, so missed the sunrise on the sea walkway. But the sea is really blue and beautiful.
Third stop: Farmers' market.
Went there for lunch around noon, said to be quite affordable, had milk tea and Xitianwei flat food, a popular place here, waited for about fifteen minutes, but it was large, delicious, and affordable, the king of cost performance, 30 yuan for a meal.
Fourth stop: Tianfei Homeland.
Passed by when going to the farmers' market, came here after eating, mainly Mazu's ancestral temple, former residence, and Meizhou women's culture, etc., there's a beautiful tower, took some photos.
Fifth stop: Mazu Temple.
Min Nan people who love to worship naturally won't miss this spot, prayed with full sincerity, hoping Mazu will bless 🙏! After praying, went up to the mountaintop Mazu Cultural Park and took photos with the giant Mazu statue, overlooking the island from the mountain, extremely beautiful, took many photos.
Sixth stop: Goose Tail Beach, Feiji Cave.
After visiting the Mazu Temple and seeing there was still plenty of time, rode the electric scooter to the other end's Goose Tail Divine Rock Park. The beach here is a bit more crowded, with coffee shops, but didn't stay long, went straight to see Feiji Cave, this marine erosion landscape is quite special, just a bit far. The cave entrance was always crowded with people taking photos, didn't get a clean background shot, so headed back directly.
Returned to the wharf around 5:30 pm, returned the electric scooter, took the ferry off the island, missed the sunset, if there's enough time, can stay overnight on the island, many scenic spots can be enjoyed slowly, not many tourists, beautiful scenery, personally feel it's a very worthwhile island to visit. Meizhou Island is beautiful, will come again!
An average of 300 yuan per person includes all transportation costs, ferry and entrance tickets, lunch, feels really cost-effective

Jiulihu Scenic Area Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Visit Jiuli Lake in Xianyou for a serene getaway, and drive straight to the entrance to avoid the crowds!
Located in Xianyou County, Putian, Fujian, it's a place that sounds enchanting just by its name. Departing from Fuzhou, it only takes an hour and a half by car to reach the picturesque Jiuli Lake.🌄🌊 The area boasts numerous waterfalls, especially the twin waterfalls, which are spectacular after the rain when the water volume is abundant. But be careful when you get close for photos, as you might get soaked like I did.💃 Therefore, wear something flowy or a tight hoodie, and bring a change of clothes to prevent catching a cold. Remember to wear non-slip shoes, as the ground beneath the waterfalls can be slippery.🚗 I recommend driving there yourself. During holidays when it's crowded, the scenic area will implement traffic restrictions, and vehicles will have to park in a parking lot 3 kilometers away, then take a free shuttle bus to the entrance of the scenic area.🚌🎫 The ticket price is 50 yuan for adults, and university students under the age of 24 can enjoy a half-price discount, but there is no such discount for graduate and doctoral students.😢🚌 When descending the mountain, you can choose to take the scenic area's sightseeing bus, which is 10 yuan per person, and it will take you directly to the parking lot. If you choose to walk down, you will also need to queue for the shuttle bus at the entrance of the scenic area, but it's free of charge.🍢 There are many stalls selling snacks in the scenic area, such as oyster cakes, grilled sausages, corn, etc., all of which are delicious choices for summer.🌈 Take advantage of the summer and come to Jiuli Lake to experience the grandeur of nature! Whether it's the coolness under the waterfall or the fresh air in the mountains, it will make you want to stay forever.🌄
I would like to call it the Fujian Waterfall Ceiling!!
Attraction Introduction: Jiutian Yaochi, a different view with every step
Jiuli Lake is located in Xianyou County, Putian City, Fujian Province, and is named after the legend of nine carps transforming into dragons and ascending to heaven. Surrounded by mountains, with rippling blue waves and cascading waterfalls, it seems like a series of meticulously arranged landscape paintings by nature. The most unmissable spot is the 'Nine Bends Waterfall', from the first to the ninth bend, each with its own unique shape and impressive force, especially the 'Bead Curtain Bend' and 'Jade Pillar Bend', which are like white silk hanging in the air, with pearls splashing around, leaving visitors in awe. In addition, strolling along the lake, you can encounter towering ancient trees and rugged rocks, each place forming a scene that is fascinating.
Itinerary: Two days and one dream, an in-depth experience
Day 1: Exploring Jiuli

• Evening: Return to the accommodation, choose a scenic homestay, and enjoy a peaceful night in the mountains.
Day 2: Mountain hiking, cultural exploration
• Morning: Join a morning hike in the mountains, explore the trails around Jiuli Lake, and feel the fresh air and the fragrance of birds and flowers in the mountains.

• Evening: End the journey, return home full of memories, but leave your heart in the tranquil mountains and waters.
Food Recommendations: A journey of taste buds
• Putian braised noodles: The noodles are chewy, the soup is rich, and the ingredients are plentiful, a local delicacy not to be missed.
• Oyster omelette: Fresh oysters perfectly combined with sweet potato flour, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, bursting with flavor.
• Xianyou flat food: Thin skin and fresh filling, clear and delicious soup, every bite tastes like home.
Transportation Strategy:
• Self-driving: The most convenient, starting from Putian city center, take the Putian-Yong expressway, and it takes about 1 hour to reach.
• Public transportation: You can take a high-speed train to Xianyou Station, then transfer to a bus or taxi to the scenic area, which takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour.
In this fairyland forgotten by time, every breath seems to cleanse the dust from the soul. Coming to Jiuli Lake is not only a feast for the eyes and taste buds but also a baptism for the depths of the soul. Pick up your luggage, and let us embark on this journey to find the Peach Blossom Land in our dreams together!
Xu Xiake rated Jiulihu as one of the three wonders of Fujian
Jiulihu is located in the Wanshan area to the northeast of Xianyou County, Xinghua Prefecture, as mentioned in 'Qian Que Lei Shu'. Jiulihu, as a national water conservancy scenic spot and a provincial scenic spot, was rated by the great Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake as one of the 'Three Wonders of Fujian' along with Wuyi Mountain and Yuhua Cave.

Route🚗
It takes more than an hour to drive from Putian city to Jiuli Lake scenic area. When you are about to arrive following the navigation, the staff stopped and said that the car could not go further in, and could only be parked in the outside parking lot. However, parking is free, and there is a bus to the scenic area next to the parking lot. After arriving at the main entrance, buy a ticket to enter.
🕍Entrance: The scenic area has two doors, one is the tourist center located in the center, which requires online booking verification with ID card. The other is a side door, which can be entered by scanning the code. We chose to buy tickets on site and enter through the side door (there are two interconnecting routes between the two doors, we chose the side door that passed the cement road, which takes about half an hour to walk, and the scenery along the way is beautiful).
👯About half an hour's walk, you will see a fork in the road. According to the sign, turn right to reach the entrance of the waterfall. First, you will pass through the Tongxian Bridge--then follow the instructions on the sign and turn left to smoothly proceed with the next journey.
🍱Snacks: There will be uncles and aunts selling local snacks along the way, the price is a bit more expensive than outside, but it is still acceptable, and there is vegetarian food to try😊
🏇Horse riding photos: On the way to and from, you will pass some small white horses. They are raised by uncles and aunts themselves and are very gentle and obedient. It only costs 5 yuan to take a photo once, and the uncles and aunts will dress up the little white horse, adjust the position and help you get on the horse. The aunt will also take pictures for you with a camera, and you can also take your own shots.
🚌Sightseeing car: The scenic area has a sightseeing car, each trip costs 10💰. But it's probably a car every 30 minutes, and you have to queue when there are many people (the sightseeing car is coming down from the top of the mountain, because it takes a long time to walk, too tired and don't want to move, so we still choose to take the car down the mountain, after all, too tired and sleepy, I fell asleep in a few minutes on the car).
🐾Play time: It is estimated to be 2.5 hours to 4 hours, depending on the speed of each person, you can take more photos and walk different roads. We walked and stopped all the way). You can enter the scenic area earlier, the flow of people will not be so much, you can take pictures more easily, and you do not need to queue when shooting the waterfall, but we went there during the National Day holiday, there were many people and less waterfall water, it is recommended to go there from April to June.
📸Friends who take pictures remember to bring an extra piece of clothing or coat for sun protection, as well as tissues. We kept wiping our faces today. Taking pictures near the waterfall will really get your body wet, but taking pictures under the waterfall is very good and interesting😂.
Climbing high mountains requires physical strength, it is not recommended to bring too small children or elderly people who have difficulty walking to play.
