2024 Pulau Kerengga Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in October)
Best island in Malaysia is Pulau Kapas
How do we choose the best island in Malaysia? For me it comes down to three things. Beaches, landscape, and marine life. This island has a special spot in my heart as it ticks all the boxes for it to be called the best island. The West side of the island has powdery beach sands and beautiful corals, meanwhile the East side has huge cliffs and amazing dive spots. The landscape is so unique that some would compare it to a famous location in Bali. This island also is less crowded and gives you a sense of exclusivity. Marine life on this island is abundant from seeing Black tip reef sharks in the morning, to huge schools of Bumphead Parrotfish and also blue luminiferous planktons on certain seasons. Many people skip this island thinking it's too close to the mainland but this is truly a gem #myhiddengems #malaysia #terengganu #pulaukapas

Gem Island Private island paradise
#malaysia
This is a private island with only one resort. This island is just next to the much bigger Pulau Kapas. The hotel rate is more expensive and budget travelers will normally go to Pulau Kapas for cheaper cost and for more happenings. Gemia Island is a nice place to relax because there are not many visitor.
Getting there - Parking at Marang Jetty. It is public parking, chargeable at RM6 per night. Boat Transfer from Marang Jetty to the Resort. This is provided by Suria Link Boat Services. The boat is new and safe. Boatman is friendly too. Boat ride is about 15 minutes from Marang.
Ambiance/Facilities - Snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. If you are lucky like us, you got to witness the releasing of many one month old leatherback turtles at the beach. One in a lifetime experience.
Highlights - The corals were decent, especially on the South China Sea-facing coast and we saw branch & staghorn corals, shelf/plate coral, sea anemone and clown fish, boxfish, sea cucumber and sea slugs, and too many fishes to name. It was great fun kayakking around Gem island (just 30-40 mins.) and we also kayakked over to Pulau Kapas (just the beach facing Gem Island).
Food - The food at Gem Island was also quite yummy. The breakfast croissant was light and buttery and the coffee was robust enough. I liked the Indian style chicken curry for dinner and I found the squid cooked in a savoury-sweet-slightly sour gravy yummy.
Tips - This resort they have electricity break time in the afternoon for 3 hours and prepared to pay some extra charges at the hotel after checkout. Activities like kayaking not included.
Rating - 7/10
Day Trip at Kapas Island 😍
Stay at Hotel Pelangi Marang for 1 night only and enjoyed Day Trip to Kapas Island 😍 Hotel beside Kapas Jetty..buy ticket from the agent at the jetty..take only 10 minutes in boat and you can enjoy the view 😍 kids are very excited and happy to swim in crystal clear water..we had so much fun and enjoyable moments!! 😍😍 i like this place so much! we will come again.
FAMILY DAY AT PULAU KAPAS
Getting There - From jetty Marang to Pulau Kapas, it will take about 10-15 minutes via speed boat. For me who travel with 2 young children, Pulau Kapas is the most suitable and safe to bring as it only take a few minutes to reach the island.
Attractions - The beach is stunning, with crystal clear water and u dont need to go far to explore the sealife. u can just feed the fish in front of the beach. Just bring some bread and snorkeling stuff, the fish is just beside u 😃
Hotels - During my stay, i can see only 2 chalet at the island. I chose Ombak Kapas Island Beach Resort. It is very recommended as the services is good, the food is nice and the room is comfortable.
Food & Restaurants - U can eat at the chalet or there are a few stall selling food. Just bring enough money 😜
Shopping - Jetty area or Marang City which is just a few KM from the island.

Wonderful small private island with only one resort. Love the water villas, I saw sharks right on our balcony. Small island yet peaceful. You literally canoe to pulau kapas and back. Beautiful as well. The foods included in the package is nice too.
I saw a turtle laying eggs on the beach! (Please do not disturb the turtles) very lucky! The staffs were very friendly and helpful. It was a lovely stay.
Lesser known Island Getaway
Here is one island people rarely talk about. When people talk about islands in Malaysia many would mention powdery beach sand, crystal clear water and marine life. Here is an island which has all of that and also an addition of huge cliffs. This island has a beach on one side and a cliff on the other. Perfect spot for those who love to try cliff jumping #islandtours #Kapas #malaysia

I was lucky to run into the owners on the mainland. They invited me to come check out their resort for a day trip (as I already had hotel booked).
Glad I did; not only was it a stunning location but the food, service and company will be a memory cherished for a lifetime.
After lunch and a few beverages; the offer to stay the night was available.. so I took it.
Now I can’t say you can turn up and be accommodated all the time (limited rooms) It is much advised to pre book your stay. Stay comes with meals & transfers to and from the island.
What a paradise to relax in. You will never understand the beauty of this island until you go visit! It is a must A++ service.
Gem Island - Beautiful isolated island
#mymymemories
Gem Island. Wonderful small private island with only one resort. If you dont like crowded, cfull of tourist beach this is the place to go. But if you want to party on the beach then this is not the place. Love the water villas, we saw sharks right on our balcony. We even saw a turtle laying eggs on the beach! If you very lucky like us, they even have a turtle hatchling release at the beach. Such an experience just for us. The staffs were very friendly and helpful. Food was nice. It was a lovely stay.
Getting There - Resort Gem Island is a 15-minute boat ride from Marang Jetty. From the jetty, it is a 30-minute drive from the Kuala Terengganu Airport.
Attractions at Gemia Resort - Stunning island with 2 beaches for swimming. We even saw a turtle laying eggs on the beach! If you very lucky like us, the turtle sanctuary there will have a turtle hatchling release at the beach. Such an experience just for us.
Kayaking for rent and snorkelling is also a must activities at this island. Grey shark can be seen in the morning by the balcony. Next to this Island is Bukit Singa. We kayak for about 30 minutes, and left our kayak at the shore. No one else there so don’t worry much. Hike up to the top and the view is amazing. Worth the sweat.
Food - This resort have 1 restaurant. The view from the table is amazing. The foods are yummy, some local dishes by the chef and big portion too well worth the price. I love it overall. #terengganu #malaysiaisland

if you are visiting Kuala Terengganu, there will be a lots of beach. here is one of most cleans & beautiful with clear water beach located in Marang Terengganu. this beach is hidden & not many peoples yet know & go. you can seee beautiful view of pulau kapas from this beach & can bring a tent & have arelaxibg day. the beach also have rumah api & you can walk to rumah api. it take about 10 minutes to go to rumah api. it also give you a korean drama vibes. this beach has amazing view with lots of kapal
The Kapas island can be reached in less than 10 minutes by a speed boat from the Marang jetty. One might presume that since the island is so close to the mainland, the waters might not be as crystal clear as those surrounding islands in more isolated locations. However, this is not the case – you will be immediately attracted to the clarity of the waters as soon as the speedboat coasts to a stop when arriving at the jetty.
The moment I dipped my feet in the water, I immediately noticed that I could see all the way through to the bottom, far below. What added to the magic of the moment – was a massive school of colorful fish swimming by in a whirling motion (I later researched that this method of swimming is a prey to predator safety mechanism).
Large shoals of fish can be easily spotted from the shore. Suffice to say, snorkeling and diving is readily available – directly from the beach! All necessary gear can be rented from most of the beachfront hotels or tour operators in the area. If you dream of swimming among colorful fish, bring along some pieces of bread to draw them towards you.
