Pohang is located on the east coast of the Republic of Korea. It is known as the "steel capital" of Korea. It is home to the country's largest steel plant, POSCO. What's that hand in the water and what meaning does it carry? A little prelude. This place is called Homigot (호미곶), which translates as "hoe-shaped cape." For Koreans, this place is much more than just a geographical point on a map. In ancient geomancy, Korea was represented as a tiger overlooking the sea, and Homigot is the tiger's tail. The tail was considered a source of good fortune and vitality. Koreans believed that if the earth's energy was misdirected, the country could face difficulties. Therefore, even during the Joseon Dynasty, the king sent scientists here to check the energy balance and protect nature. Since then, Homigot has symbolized a place where one can recharge and begin a new journey. The cape's main symbol is the "Hand of Harmony" (상생의 손), but there are actually two hands, each 8.5 meters high. They were erected in 1999 to celebrate the beginning of the new millennium. The right hand rises from the sea, while the left rests on land nearby. This symbolizes harmony between humans and nature, mutual aid and unity, and the hope for the reunification of North and South Korea.
