Hisar Kapia – A time-traveling gateway connecting two worlds

In the heart of Plovdiv's Old Town stands a timeless stone archway, Hisar Kapia—the old city gate. Standing majestically on a rocky hill, it's a gateway connecting two worlds. Those who pass through it often don't realize they're "stepping into history." From the steep cobblestone streets to the narrow alleys lined with Revival architecture houses and the thick stone walls that once served as the city's defenses. - Built between the 11th and 14th centuries during the Byzantine Empire. - It's believed to have been built over the remains of the original Roman walls. - The area around the gate is now filled with old houses, which have been converted into museums, restaurants, and galleries, but still retain their original structures. Before arriving at Hisar Kapia, we stopped at Restaurant Photo Club, a restaurant in the old city that resembles an ancient wooden house. Vines cascade over the eaves, long tables covered in white cloths, and traditionally patterned cushions. The food served here is infused with Balkan and Turkish influences, from fresh salads drizzled with olive oil to crispy fried beef liver and richly flavored grilled sausages. Every dish melted away any hesitation before entering the restaurant. After dinner, on our way back to our hotel, we passed Hisar Kapia, a Roman-era wall. The orange light from street lamps reflected off the ancient stone walls, creating a solemn yet charming atmosphere, like stepping back in time to Plovdiv's former fortress. Meanwhile, a local photographer was standing there taking photos. It just so happened that someone in our group walked into the scene, creating a picture filled with life: the people, the architecture, and the living, breathing old town. ✨ Standing here taught us that "sometimes the journey isn't about constantly moving forward, but about going back and fulfilling what's missing."
