Wat Khanon, originally named Wat Kanon Prowas, is one of Thailand's significant temples. It is renowned for preserving the cultural art of Nang Yai shadow puppetry and has been registered by UNESCO as a cultural heritage of the Asia-Pacific region (ACCU). Nearby the temple was a tax collection checkpoint called Khanon checkpoint. During the reign of King Rama V, when he visited the area, Luang Pu Klom, the abbot of Wat Kanon at that time, remarked, 'It is embarrassing to name a temple after an animal. It would be better to change the name.' Thus, the name was changed from 'Wat Kanon' to 'Wat Khanon Prowas,' reflecting the tax collection checkpoint adjacent to the temple.
