Phimai Stone Castle

The ancient Khmer-style stone castle in the Baphuon style is located in Phimai District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. It consists of a large and beautiful stone castle from the Khmer Empire. It was built during the reign of King Suryavarman I around the 16th Buddhist century to be a temple for the Brahman religion and later changed to Mahayana Buddhism. It is a stone castle with the tallest main prang in Thailand, with a height from the base to the top of 28 meters. The park is located on the east bank of the Mun River and is in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Phimai District, on an area of ​​115 rai, with a rectangular plan, 565 meters wide and 1,030 meters long. The special feature of Phimai Stone Castle is that this stone castle is built facing south, unlike other stone castles that usually face east. It is assumed that it was to face the route from Phra Nakhon, the capital city of the Khmer Empire at that time, which entered Phimai City from the south.
