Exploring the Pong Daeng Kiln Site The large mound in the middle of a rice field in Ban Nong Phak Chik, Village No. 4, Tambon Sai Khao, Amphoe Phan, Chiang Rai Province, is home to 14 ancient kilns. The Fine Arts Department surveyed and registered it as an ancient site in 1961, covering a total area of ​​over 100 rai. These ancient kilns are located on a mound or mound in the middle of a rice field, covered with trees. Initially, four kilns were found: Doi San Pa Sak Kiln, Doi Santhat Kiln, and Ban Champun Kiln. These kilns are from the same era as those found in Sukhothai and Wiang Kalong, but are smaller than those in Sukhothai. Excavations at the pottery kiln site have found cups, plates, bowls, jars, lamps or lanterns, swan-shaped water jugs, etc. Lamps are often made in the shape of animals such as elephants, horses, and cows, with small cups placed on the backs of the animals to hold things or oil. These pottery items are usually coated with a light green, clear liquid, both on the outside and inside.
