Antarctica: A Journey to the World's End
When I finally saved enough money to visit Antarctica, I felt an unprecedented sense of calm.
Some say, "Antarctica is farther than outer space," because while it only takes minutes to reach space, it takes several days to get to Antarctica. Of course, this is due to differences in transportation, but the distant and surreal nature of Antarctica, the world's end, makes humans seem as insignificant as NPCs in a video game. 🧍🏻♀️
Why does Antarctica always feel so unreal? ❓
🇦🇶 The purest scenery on Earth
Antarctica is almost entirely covered by glaciers, with only 2% of its land free from perennial snow and ice. It boasts peaks, cliffs, lakes, and even volcanoes 🌋. As we navigate through icy seas, surrounded by icebergs of various shapes and sizes, it's hard to believe that 90% of these massive structures lie hidden beneath the water.
🇦🇶 Home to 8 of the world's 18 penguin species
Though lifeless for humans, Antarctica is a paradise for penguins 🐧. From the largest Emperor Penguins to kiwi-like King Penguin chicks, the swimming champion Gentoo Penguins, the feisty Adélie Penguins, sentinel-like Chinstrap Penguins, slick-haired Macaroni Penguins, scruffy Rockhopper Penguins, and the loud Magellanic Penguins, their playful antics bring warmth to this frozen planet.
🇦🇶 Known as the "White Desert"
Antarctica is the coldest, stormiest, and windiest landmass on Earth 🌪️, with an annual average precipitation of just 55mm. Near the poles, there is almost no rainfall, and the air is extremely dry.
🇦🇶 The phenomenon of "Milk White Sky"
Sunlight repeatedly scatters and reflects between the ice layers and low clouds, combined with the effects of low temperatures and cold air, creating a milky white light. Everything in the field of vision seems to blend into a milky haze 🥛, making it hard to distinguish between near and far objects, often leading to optical illusions.
What else is fun in Antarctica? ❓
