Corfu's Famous Holy Orthodox Monastery

The Paleokastritsa Monastery, also known as the Holy Monastery of the Theotokos, is found on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Corfu. It is set on a high, green headland above the popular resort area of Paleokastritsa, looking out over the clear blue waters of the Ionian Sea and the rugged coastline. The location is one of the most famous and photographed spots on the island. The site is an active Eastern Orthodox monastery with a history that goes back a long way. The first building on the site was founded in 1228, but much of what is visible today, including the church and the monks' cells, was built during the 18th century after the earlier structures were destroyed in past wars. The monastery’s name, Paleokastritsa, which means 'old little castle,' hints at the possibility that a fortress once stood here before the religious building. #mediterranean
