Echoes of Ancient Rhythms: Serene Prayers at Sumiyoshi Taisha

Day 1 In the early morning, I took the Nankai Electric Railway, passing through the bustling city to reach Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka. As soon as I stepped into the shrine, I was captivated by its tranquility and solemnity. Sumiyoshi Taisha is one of Japan's oldest shrines, featuring the unique Sumiyoshi-zukuri architectural style. The vermilion torii gates contrast beautifully with the lush green trees. I first purified my hands at the temizuya, feeling a sense of inner peace through this traditional ritual, and then walked to the main hall to offer my prayers. The stone lanterns and moss-covered stone paths within the shrine added a touch of antiquity. I paid special attention to the Sorihashi (Taiko Bridge), an arched bridge that spans the pond like a rainbow, its reflection in the water creating a dreamlike scene. In the afternoon, I sat quietly by the pond, watching the koi swim leisurely, as time seemed to slow down. After my visit, I went to a nearby traditional teahouse to enjoy a bowl of matcha and some wagashi, marking a perfect end to the day. Day 2 On the second day, I returned to Sumiyoshi Taisha to participate in a traditional rice planting festival called Otaue-shinji. This event reenacts ancient agricultural rituals, accompanied by the sounds of taiko drums and traditional music. I watched dancers and participants in elaborate costumes perform a blessing dance in the fields, a scene both sacred and moving. Afterwards, I visited the small shrines within the main shrine complex, particularly the 'Sessha' Sumiyoshi Four Shrines, each exuding a unique spiritual aura. I then took part in a bookmark blessing experience, writing my wishes on small paper strips and hanging them on the prayer rack, feeling a sense of peace and anticipation. In the afternoon, I strolled along the small paths outside the shrine, discovering hidden craft shops where I bought some small ornaments inspired by the Sorihashi, leaving a unique memento of my journey. The ancient architecture and rituals of Sumiyoshi Taisha offer a deep sense of Japan's traditional culture. Here, I was able to set aside my busy thoughts and quietly feel the passage of time, ending this meaningful journey with a heart full of emotion and blessings.
