[Tokyo/Katsunuma Shrine] A shrine founded by a descendant of Taira no Masakado

The Mita clan is said to have controlled the Tama River upstream from Hamura. Records also remain that the Mita clan are descendants of Taira no Masakado. In 1378, Mita Shimousa no Kami Nagatsuna, lord of Katsunuma Castle, built Jogan-ji Temple. He then founded Shinmei-o Daijingu Shrine as the guardian deity of the temple and the local area. In 1868, it was renamed Katsunuma Shrine and moved to its current location. This shrine is located on hilltop overlooking the cityscape.
