German Alpine Route – Oberammergau

Oberammergau is a beautiful town at the foot of the Alps in southern Germany. The biggest feature of the town is the exquisite frescoes painted on the exterior walls of traditional German southern buildings. The themes cover various fairy tale scenes and religious activities. The content is very diverse and gorgeous. In order to express their gratitude, the devout residents of the town have mobilized the entire village to perform "The Passion of the Christ" (Passionsspielen) in the town theater every 10 years since 1634. This performance has lasted for more than 370 years to date. This once-in-a-decade play is performed and produced by the residents of the small town. It is said that residents living outside the town will take a long vacation in the year of the performance to come back and participate in the production! Dove Square in the center of the town is the most lively area in the village, surrounded by numerous businesses. Come out of Oberammergau Station, walk east along Bahnhofstr., cross the Ammer River and enter the densely populated area of ​​the town. The town is small, but worth savoring. You can wander through the crisscrossing alleys, or stop in front of the colorful German-style houses to admire the beautiful and historic frescoes on the exterior walls and feel the most authentic southern German atmosphere.
