A precedent for revitalizing historic buildings after 1840

Its history dates back to 1194, when Alonso II the Chaste and his wife Sancha donated a former Arab castle to the monks of Poblet to build a monastery and strengthen the Christian faith in the area. In 1840, Pablo Muntadas Campeny bought the monastery, preserving agricultural and livestock activities there. His son, Juan Federico Muntadas, remodeled the park, creating roads and paths and planting trees. After the Iris Cave was discovered in 1860, it was opened to the public. The first fish farming center in Spain opened in 1867, introducing common trout and Iberian crab to the river. The Centre continues to supply Aragon's rivers with species for repopulation.
