If you are going to Nikko by car on weekends, head there at 8am to avoid the huge traffic jams on Irohazaka. Because it is a busy time, you don't need a map. It gets hot because you basically walk. It opens from 9am, so it may be empty if you come at that time. If you buy your ticket online first and have it issued at the entrance, you can enter without waiting in line. The stairs leading up to the inner shrine are crowded and there is a line, so it is a good idea to go to the toilet just before Nemuneko. It was crowded so it took about 20 minutes.
