A rare shrine built in a coastal cave

#Travelwithme Miyazaki is famous as the birthplace of Japanese mythology. Udo Shrine is one of the legendary places. Udo Shrine is a shrine with a vivid vermilion-painted main hall built in a natural cave overlooking the Hyuga-Nada Sea, and enshrines Emperor Jimmu's father, Ubukiyafukiaezu-no-mikoto, as its main deity. The shrine is surrounded by strange rocks and reefs, and the rough waves of the Pacific Ocean crash against it, making it a beautiful scenic spot. In front of the main hall is a sacred stone called Kameishi, which is said to be the turtle that Toyotamahime rode on when she visited from Umi-jingu Shrine and turned into stone. There is a square-shaped hole at the top of the stone, and it is said that if men throw a "lucky ball" with their left hand and women throw it with their right hand into the hole, their wish will come true. The unglazed "lucky balls" made of rolled clay and stamped with the character for luck are made by students at Udo Elementary School.
