“Nandaimong Gate”, a national treasure of Nara

If you want to walk to worship at Todaiji Temple, you must walk through this gate first. Nandaimon Gate is a large temple gate made of wood. Completed in 1203, it has a 2-tiered roof and 2 large statues of guardian deities. This sculpture is registered as a national treasure along with Nandaimon Gate. Nandaimon Gate is built in Chinese architecture. During the Song Dynasty, it was built with 18 giant logs. In front of the Great Buddha Hall, there is an octagonal bronze lantern standing out in the middle of the courtyard in front of the temple.
