Nanjing also has a 'sea'—Shijiu Lake

Shijiu Lake is located in Lishui District and Gaochun District of Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, and Dangtu County and Bowang District of Ma'anshan, Anhui Province. It is one of the famous freshwater lakes in China and one of the largest freshwater lakes in the country. The west of the lake connects to the Yangtze River, Qingyi River, Shuiyang River, and Guxi River, and is connected to the Qinhuai River and Tianshengqiao River in Hubei, belonging to the Yangtze River system. Among them, the Shuiyang River and the ancient river are the main ones. The continuous shrinkage of Shijiu Lake is caused by unreasonable human reclamation. The lake area is shallow and flat, with limited water storage capacity, which is further reduced by the reclamation of the lake shore. Due to the connection between rivers and lakes, during the flood season, river water flows backward, bringing in external water, causing poor flood discharge, forming 'flood retention areas' and 'flood channels', leading to frequent floods in the surrounding areas of the lake. Therefore, it is important to protect Shijiu Lake and cherish Nanjing's 'sea'.
