Not seen in heaven or on earth, the splendor of Jinling surpasses even the high heavens

Mount Niushou is located within the Jiangning District in the southern scenic suburbs of Nanjing. It is named for its two prominent peaks that stand opposite each other, resembling the horns of a bull's head, and is also known as Bull Head Mountain among the locals. Wang Dao, the Prime Minister of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, once advised Emperor Yuan of Jin, Sima Rui, who had just established his regime, to abandon the idea of building a symbol of imperial power outside the palace. He invited Emperor Yuan to ride out of the Xuan Yang Gate, look south towards Mount Niushou, and witness the spectacular sight of the opposing peaks, seizing the opportunity to counsel the emperor: 'This is the Heavenly Gate; why bother constructing another!' Hence, the mountain was also known as 'Heavenly Gate Mountain'. Mount Niushou is renowned for its beautiful natural scenery, often referred to as 'Spring Niushou'; it has a profound cultural heritage, being the site of Yue Fei's resistance against the Jurchens and the resting place of Zheng He; it has a long-standing Buddhist Zen culture, being the birthplace and origin of the Chinese Zen Buddhism's Niutou School. Currently, there are attractions such as the Buddha's Top Temple, Buddha's Top Pagoda, Buddha's Top Palace, Yue Fei's Anti-Jin Fortifications, Cliffside Inscriptions, Hongjue Temple Pagoda, and Zheng He Cultural Park, among others.
