Owari Tokugawa Art Museum: A Treasure Trove

This museum prominently displays artworks and treasures handed down through the Owari Tokugawa family. The majority of the collection stems from the Tokugawa clan or their retainers, yet it also includes numerous National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties like illustrated scrolls of The Tale of Genji and Hokoku Festival Screens. It remains a museum worth visiting at least once, even if no special events are happening. The museum was completed and opened to the public in 1935, retaining a modern architectural style from the early Showa era, despite having undergone several renovations. As such, visitors can relish not just the art pieces on exhibit but also the museum's own atmosphere and design. In comparison to other museums of a similar scale, the interior layout is somewhat complex, featuring cramped passageways and hallways in some sections. Lighting within the exhibit rooms is kept rather dim to protect the artworks, which may make the environment feel subdued (a common practice in many museums). Families with young children should be mindful not to lose track of their children. Uncommonly for a museum, photography is allowed for personal use. However, using flash, tripods, or stabilizing gear is strictly banned, and not every exhibit is available for photography — visitors should heed posted notices and regulations.
