Gion-ji Temple is a Soto Zen temple located at the western end of the Arimatsu Tokaido. The eastern part of the temple grounds faces the approach to Arimatsu Tenmangusha Shrine. It is said to have been founded during the Bunroku era (1592-95), and was originally located in the neighboring village of Narumi, but was renamed Gion-ji Temple and moved to its current location in 1755 (5th year of the Horeki era). At the top of the stairs from the road side, there is a magnificent mountain gate, and beyond that you can see the calm main hall that is typical of Zen Buddhism. Also, at the entrance to Gion-ji Temple, there is the Second Matsu of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. Apparently, it was picked from a large 300-year-old tree that had been in this place since the Tokaido was first opened. It was a very beautiful and impressive pine tree. Definitely worth a look!
