Zen Journey: Nanzō-ji and a Spiritual Trip in Osaka

Day 1 In the morning, with a peaceful heart, I headed to Nanzō-ji, located in the heart of Osaka. This ancient Zen temple is hidden among modern buildings, like a tranquil spot amidst the city's hustle and bustle. Upon entering the temple, I was greeted by a simple yet Zen-inspired garden. Taking a closer look, the stone lanterns, dry landscape, and lush trees formed a harmonious picture. I participated in a zazen (seated meditation) session within the temple, feeling the rhythm of my breath in the silent atmosphere, allowing my mind to return to tranquility. In the afternoon, I moved to the temple's cultural exhibition hall to watch an exhibition on Zen art. From paintings to calligraphy, each piece exuded profound Zen wisdom. In the evening, I strolled along the streets outside the temple, enjoying the sunset glow and the slow passage of time, a tranquility that was hard to leave behind. Day 2 On the second day, I returned to Nanzō-ji to participate in a Zen tea ceremony experience. Under the guidance of the master, I learned every detail of making tea, from arranging the tea utensils to mixing the tea powder, each step emphasizing focus and peace. Amidst the fragrance of tea, I felt not only a treat for the taste buds but also an inner calm. Next, I attended a 'Zen Lecture,' listening to the abbot share the philosophical wisdom of Zen, which inspired me to re-examine my life. In the afternoon, I visited the nearby Shitennō-ji, experiencing another form of Buddhist culture. The majestic architecture here formed an interesting contrast with the simplicity of Nanzō-ji. In the evening, I chose a Japanese vegetarian restaurant, ending this fulfilling Zen journey with a light and healthy meal. The two-day trip to Nanzō-ji deeply impressed me with the charm of Zen culture. It is not only a place of tranquility in the city but also a spiritual bridge connecting the past and the present. This journey was not just an exploration of attractions but also an inner practice and rebirth.
