Although it has barely been completed for 10 years it makes an impressive and unusual sight. Coupled with the equally enormous reclining Buddha and the sitting Buddha(in the course of construction) and the forest of ten thousand small Buddhas not to mention the nearby Thanboddhay pagoda, it makes for a fascinating day out. From Mandalay I travelled by local minibus to Monywa and then hired a motor bike taxi for the 20 Km journey. cost 15,000 kyat for 3 hours. While the aesthetic impression leaves overtones of Kitsch the climb to the 16 floor of the standing Buddha is rewarding for the absence of other Westerners and the warmth and friendliness of the local pilgrims.
