Montacute House – A Timeless Elizabethan Treasure in Somerset

I had the pleasure of spending a day at Montacute House, and it truly felt like stepping back in time. This grand Elizabethan mansion in the village of Montacute, Somerset, is one of the finest examples of late 16th-century architecture in England — beautifully preserved and full of character. The first thing that struck me was the honey-coloured Ham Hill stone used to build the house. It almost glowed in the sunlight, giving the whole estate a warm, golden tone. Inside, the house is filled with rich period detail — dark wood panelling, huge fireplaces, and some seriously grand rooms. But the star of the show has to be the Long Gallery, stretching over 170 feet, and lined with striking portraits from the National Portrait Gallery. Walking through it felt like strolling through a living history book. The gardens are a joy in every season — beautifully landscaped with manicured lawns, flower beds, and tree-lined avenues. I took a peaceful walk up to St Michael’s Hill, where the views of the Somerset countryside were absolutely stunning. There are woodland paths, picnic spots, and even a lovely little second-hand bookshop tucked away in the old stables — a quiet gem! Best time to visit? Spring and early summer are ideal for blooming gardens, but autumn offers gorgeous colours too. Honestly, Montacute is magical all year round.
