This is the 2nd building of the Mokpo Modern History Museum in Jeollanam-do. Mokpo's first dock labor movement The beginning of the modern Mokpo people's struggle was the dock labor movement that took place after the port opened in October 1897. Japanese merchants, with their strong capital and the protection of the Japanese consulate, took control of Mokpo's commercial district and tried to subjugate Korean laborers under their power. In the process, the dock workers' resistance was fierce. The Mokpo Independence Movement took place on March 20, 1919, but it was disbanded on that day without any major conflict due to persuasion by the government. After that, a large-scale Independence Movement began on April 8. Since Mokpo was a city with a large Japanese population, surveillance was strict to suppress the Independence Movement. Even after the March 1st Movement, students' anti-Japanese movements were active in Mokpo. The representative examples are the Independence Movement of Jeongmyeong Girls' School and Yeongheung School in 1921 and the participation of Mokpo Commercial School in the Gwangju Student Anti-Japanese Movement in 1929. In November 1921, Jeongmyeong Girls' School students marched while holding the Taegeukgi and shouting "Long Live the Independence of Korea" to widely publicize the issue of Korean independence in time for the international conference held in Washington, D.C. Yeongheung School students also staged the Independence Movement the following day, November 15. Mokpo Commercial School students supported the Gwangju Student Anti-Japanese Movement that occurred in November 1929. Mokpo was a city where various worker classes were formed as it developed as a port city after the opening of its ports. During the Japanese colonial period, there were not many local cities where many factories were established or labor industries were developed like Mokpo. However, since the reality of workers under Japanese colonial rule was not good, labor movements to improve worker treatment became active. After the Mokpo Vanguard Alliance was formed in 1925, the Oil Refinery Workers' Union, Rice Mill Workers' Union, and Textile Workers' Union were founded by occupation.
