If you start from Misasa Onsen to reach Mitokuyama, it takes about 15-20 minutes by bus. If you want to climb Mt. Mitoku to see this national treasure of Japan, you must go from around April to November. The mountain will be closed at other times due to snow. Climbers are not allowed to climb alone. Before climbing, they need to pay the shrine fee and the climbing fee, which is a total of JPY1200. The staff will first check the climbers' clothing. They are not allowed to wear shorts or other non-standard clothing. The shoes must have enough grooves. If the shoes do not meet the standards, you will be asked to buy a pair of straw sandals before you can enter. Mountaineering requires the use of both hands and feet, so it is best to prepare a pair of work gloves, which can also be purchased in temples. After checking and registering for the climb, you can set off by putting on the "Six Roots of Purity" shoulder strap provided by the staff. After crossing the small bridge, the first stop is a ladder formed by the exposed roots of a large tree, which should be the easiest place to walk in all the "levels". To climb further up, you need to hold the iron chain to climb the cliff. There is one before reaching the "Manjusri Hall" and "Jizo Hall". One of them is higher and steeper, and you need to hold the iron chain to climb up. It's okay to climb up, but it takes a bit of courage to climb down the mountain, and it is indeed quite dangerous. After climbing these two halls, you need to have a bit of balance on horseback. Soon after you pass them, you can see the Fuxing Hall. The Ruofu Hall is on a cliff. There seems to be a speaker playing Buddhist music nearby. I have always been curious about where the speaker is. It seems to be coming from the Ruofu Hall but it seems not to be. It is recommended to leave earlier so that you can have more time to take pictures along the way. The registration time for entering the mountain is from 8 am to 3 pm, and climbers must return to the registration office at 4:30 pm. There is a place at the trailhead where climbers can wash off the dirt before leaving. Although the place is remote and it takes some time to get here, it is a very unforgettable experience.
