We visited the famous Baba Nyonya Museum in Malacca. Tickets are priced at two levels: RM25 for general admission and RM100 for a ticket wearing traditional Baba Nyonya attire. I thought this was reasonable, especially considering the museum was a great backdrop for photos. 📷 And in the sweltering heat of Malacca, taking photos in an air-conditioned museum was quite comfortable. 😌 The admission price was well spent. Originally a private residence, the museum was renovated in 1985 by descendants of the Zeng family. It is Malaysia's first private museum, comprised of three terraced houses that showcase the prosperity and diversity of pre-WWII Baba Nyonya society. The museum building embodies a fusion of Eastern and Western influences. The interior is spacious and features a skylight for natural light and ventilation. The furniture, mostly made of Chinese rosewood, blends Chinese, Dutch, and British Victorian styles, embellished with mother-of-pearl inlaid murals and imported ceramics, creating an ornate and elegant atmosphere. Facilities within the museum, such as the reception hall, kitchen, and ancestral hall, have been preserved in their original state, showcasing the patriarchal structure of the time and the priorities of women. The entire visit offered a deep understanding of the lifestyle, culture, and traditional aesthetics of the Baba Nyonya people, making it a truly historical and cultural journey.
