Al-Haram Mosque

The Masjid al-Haram is the most important religious site in Islam, located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and is where Muslims around the world turn to face during prayer. The Masjid al-Haram is home to the Kaaba, the first house of worship, and is the center of the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages, one of the most important practices in Islam. Inside the mosque are the Kaaba, the Black Stone, the Zamzam Well, the Maqam of Ibrahim: the place believed to be the footprint of Ibrahim, and the Mount of Safa and Marwah: the place for the Saa'i, which are part of the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. The Masjid al-Haram has been renovated and expanded several times throughout its history, starting with the Caliph Umar ibn Khattab in 17 AH and continuing to the present day, with the area expanded to accommodate more pilgrims. It currently accommodates up to 3 million worshippers per day and 150,000 Tawaaf per hour. #makkah
