Sichuan-Tibet Self-Drive Tour (21) One of the most beautiful snow-capped mountains in China - Namjagbarwa Peak Nyingchi, Tibet September 19, 2024 The weather in Bayi District is sunny to cloudy, with temperatures ranging from 10-25°C. The highest altitude today is 3,500 meters, National Highway 318-County Highway 401. Meeting you is our fate, Namjagbarwa, may all your wishes come true (Figure 1). Namjagbarwa Peak, standing at the great bend of the Yarlung Zangbo River, with a main peak of 7,782 meters, is the 15th highest peak in the world. Its sharp peak pierces the blue sky, becoming the most important geographical landmark in southeastern Tibet, and is rated by "China National Geographic" as "China's most beautiful snow mountain". The glaciers on the top of the mountain are towering and beautiful, and there are often clouds and mists in the mountains, while the bottom of the mountain is the lush Jiangnan of Tibet, with beautiful scenery. It is said that there is only a 20-30% chance of seeing the southern peak all year round, which is rare and is known as the "Shy Girl Peak". Nine years ago, I only saw clouds and mist here, and now I have the chance to see it again. Yesterday evening, we arrived in Suosong Village, Pai Town, Nyingchi City, full of expectations like all other travelers. From 18:40 to 19:45, we saw the southern peak gradually appearing on stage, like a star pursued by people, all the cameras were aimed at her: clouds and mist (Figure 2), the first appearance (Figure 3), sunset golden top (Figure 4), perfect curtain call (Figure 5). There are several places to enjoy the southern peak, and we chose the most popular Suosong Village. Suosong Village, due to the popularity of the southern peak tourism, has developed rapidly, with homestays lined up one after another, most of the rooms face the southern peak, attracting tourists with the selling point of unbeatable view rooms. Many houses have viewing platforms on the roof, and drones can fly freely. The homestays in Suosong Village have better views as you go further in, and of course, the prices are higher. With the increase in the flow of southern peak tourism, the relevant parties have set up a toll booth 7 kilometers before Suosong Village, bundling it with the Yarlung Zangbo River Grand Canyon Scenic Area for sale, which is a bit far-fetched. This morning, I saw the southern peak again, and it was covered with clouds and mist again. We drove back the same way and continued eastward. There are several viewing platforms along the way where you can take a break and enjoy the scenery. "Yani Wetland" (Yarlung Zangbo River and Niyang River Basin), next to County Highway 401, Nyingchi Airport Expressway passes through, the green Niyang River and green grass beach form colorful blocks (Figure 6). "Danniang Buddha Palm Sand Dune", next to County Highway 401, it is very magical to see such a naturally formed sand dune surrounded by green water and green mountains (Figure 7). China's "Dark Hedges", on County Highway 401, there are several tree-lined archways formed by old willow trees, dense and deep, which can compete with the famous "Dark Hedges" in Northern Ireland (Figure 8). "Tongmai Bridge" is a key project on the famous Tongmai dangerous section of National Highway 318 on the Sichuan-Tibet South Line, and is now a bridge open to traffic. At the same location, there are three cross-river bridges from different historical periods, forming a scenic line (Figure 9). Regarding the road conditions of National Highway 318: Today we walked the Nyingchi-Bomi section, the road conditions before the 4073 milestone are good, the later section is partially to be repaired, partially completed, and individual sections are single-lane, and the driving is basically not affected. Stay in Bomi (altitude 2730 meters) tonight, go to Basu tomorrow, there may be road repairs.
